Flagg was most famous for his propaganda posters especially this one. It was created to encourage recruitment in the US army during WWI where over four milion posters were printed. The image was adapted again for use in WWII because of its overwhelming popularity. Flagg's poster takes the integration of nationalism in symbolic images to a new level of sophistication. The confrontational and direct address of graphic visual resemble both advertising and avant- garde techniques. To this date, Uncle Sam remains one of the most popular and iconic national personification of the United States.
