Modern Print Ads

Advertising products has become even more competitive, and often involves promotion through comparison with other products. For example, the advertisement for Mac computers has involved their main competitor, the PC. Each product is represented by a character. In fact, the product isn't presented in the ad at all. Apple assumes that everyone already knows what a Mac looks like, and impresses upon the viewer that the computer is already successful enough to not have to show it. To characterize the product, they have put reflecting qualities into the representatives. It is evident that now advertisers prioritize captivating the simple-minded viewer. We don’t stop to think that these stereotypes may be over illustrated. By providing us with the stereotype, we couldn’t possibly want to be the negative one, because we all want to be “cool.”
