1704: The Beginning
It took several years for advertising to become popular in America. Published by John Campbell in1704, the first newspaper in the country was The Boston News-Letter. It was a single sheet of paper, printed on both sides. The advertisements included small classified-looking ads from townspeople advertising their wares or their wants. The picture provided shows the third issue, containing the first known ad in America. It’s the paragraph next to the larger “A”.
