Maritime flags are a component of the International Code of Signals where each flag spells out a message letter by letter and it is interpreted through a handbook. I wonder though, what if there was a message for "I'm dropping a nuclear bomb" and the handbook was lost and no one knew what was going on. I don't think this will really happen of course. It has been well thought out and even though there are language barriers, these flags depending on where and how they are seen are able to communicate what they must.

Two cans and a string is a way in which voices are transmitted from one can to another through vibrations in the string. I have tried to make one of these before and have failed, somehow the distance limit is attractive and I really wanted it to work. I've read though on various sites that it does work, maybe I'm just not doing it right. The other day I was walking and saw that someone had set up one of these nifty contraptions and I immediately hurried over to use it with a friend of mine and it didn't work. It was heartbreaking, like learning that Barney wasn't really a dinosaur from our imagination, but a series of men who put on a costume and did funny dances.

A walkie talkie or a handheld transceiver is a portable two-way radio that was invented during WWII. Walkie talkies are awesome for conversations between people who are not too far away. Like truck drivers who use them to talk to their buddies and to try and stay awake. The only drawback is that anyone could be listening in or even join in on the conversations. A man could be talking about his wife and how she cheated on him, pouring his heart out, and anyone could just come in and say, "sorry you're wife's a skank". They do come in handy when there are cops around because there are special codes for them, like "careful there's a skunk coming", and everyone will take the necessary precautions.
