The eagle in the center of the composition is shown holding arrows, which appear only in a time of war and the presence of the eagle reflects the government and the help they require from their citizens. They provide a monetary incentive in order to persuade more men to volunteer.

The wounded soldier in the poster takes up the entire composition, with his head majestically bowed, giving him a heroic look. The entire war is summarized into one symbol: that of the red cross and the belief that the war can be saved with the simple act of helping wounded soldiers.

Family life in the United States was made difficult with the absence of most male family members and rationing constantly being implemented. However, designers continued to depict family life, showing domestic, affectionate scenes, reminding everyone who was left at home what their boys were fighting for.
