During the Civil War, many posters such as this one could be found, both in the North and South, calling for volunteers to fight for their respective sides.

During the First World War, the German army was maintained by conscription, so asking for volunteers was not necessary. Instead, they used posters as propaganda to remind men they served a purpose and they were doing their country an invaluable service.

Many posters in the United States during the Second World War asked the population who remained at home to support the troops abroad in any way they could, even if it meant simply purchasing stamps.
