Theatrograph, 1896
By the late 1800s the idea of moving pictures had occurred to numerous individuals, however, not as many followed through with the actual creation of such a device. Out of the inventors across Europe, all were designing similar devices. In England, Robert Paul created such a device called the Theatrograph after hearing of Auguste and Louis Lumière's development of the cinématograph in France. In February of 1896 Paul publicly demonstrated his Theatrograph.
