1880 / 1909 Comparison

These two images show a comparison of an engraving done in 1880 of a photograph of a woman and a replica of that same photograph done using halftones. The halftone shows much less detail, but is undeniably smoother and softer on the eyes. This sort of print making opened up a lot of possibilities.

Although the process itself required a similar amount of effort as previous techniques, this comparison was the beginning of new ways of looking at art and photography, along with printmaking itself.
